Newmarket Criminal Lawyer – A typical day at the “office”

If there is anything typical about being a criminal lawyer, it is that every day is different. It is part of why I love my job so much. There are very few dull moments.

Today I dropped my daughter off at preschool and started making my way towards Newmarket. On the way, I am making and returning calls to clients who I need to speak to. I also often receive a few calls from clients in custody during this time. I rarely listen to the radio on the way to work, because with the Bluetooth, I’m already at work.

I stop off at my office in Newmarket, grab some files, drop some things for my clerk, and then head out to Bradford where I have a new client in custody who is set to appear in Court.

I get to Bradford, and I spend some time meeting with my client’s family to discuss the criminal court process as they are unfamiliar. I then grab the Crown’s file and take it to a Crown Attorney so that I can review the file. I review the file, attend the cells and discuss the allegations with my client. I speak with my client to give him his options and then once we are on the same page I attend in the Court to have his matter dealt with in Court.

Once done in Court, I head to the gym to get in a good workout in. This is something I do as often as my schedule permits. Staying fit physically keeps my mind sharp, or so I tell myself!

After an intense workout, I have a lunch meeting with a few of the people in our office. We discuss some serious files that are on the horizon, make sure we have a solid game plan in place to ensure our clients get the best defence possible.

Lunch ends, I leave Newmarket to pick up two of my children from school. The entire commute back is full of phone calls with clients, crown attorneys and other lawyers.

I pick the kids up, head home and start the craziest part of my day! I spend the rest of the afternoon on today’s date with my wife and children hanging out, playing, getting ready for tomorrow, and the like.

After bedtime? I speak with my office and make sure we have our court schedule set for the next day. After that, I will either spend time with my wife, or work some files for a few more hours. It all depends on my schedule and how hectic it is.

Tonight? I’m going to hang out with my wife. Next week is really busy and I will be working on files almost every night. I’ll take the break while I can!
